Adult Class Descriptions

If you would like us to help you evaluate your level and suggest a class that may be appropriate for you, we provide that service to students who have registered and paid tuition. For more information, click here.

Classes for Adults

Beginning I: This introductory class is for students with little or no knowledge of Italian. The class emphasizes practical communication in Italian and is a starting point for comprehending and speaking Italian. Students learn to use the present tense in Italian. The class also discusses the geography, people, and culture of Italy.

Beginning II: In this class, students expand their Italian vocabulary and learn Italian expressions. The class emphasizes practical communication and skills for comprehension and speaking in Italian. Students learn to use the past tense. There is an emphasis on developing basic conversation skills for everyday situations and on understanding Italian culture.

Intermediate I: In this class, students develop their ability to use the present, past, and future tenses in Italian conversation. Students expand their understanding of Italian grammar and study the imperfetto, futuro, and condizionale. They enhance their Italian language skills through reading stories, listening to audio recordings, and watching video presentations.

Intermediate II: In this class, students develop their conversation ability and learn more complex Italian grammar. They improve Italian comprehension through reading articles and short stories, listening to audio recordings, and watching video presentations. Students refine their skills in applying Italian grammar in conversation, and learn to use the congiuntivo.

Advanced Conversation: This class is adapted to the particular needs of students who have a good command of the Italian language. Students read selected materials and discuss topics of general interest including Italian history, politics, social conditions, and culture. Students are encouraged to discuss their personal views, beliefs, attitudes, and observations, as well as their thoughts on language and communication. Students listen to audio recordings and watch video presentations at a level comparable to conversations between Italian native language speakers.

Advanced Literature: This class is for students who have a good command of the Italian language. In each semester, students read a selected short novel outside of class and discuss the reading during subsequent class sessions. Students also read short selections in class and discuss topics of general interest, their views on a variety of subjects, and their personal experiences. Students write dictation, listen to audio recordings, and watch video presentations at a level of Italian native language speakers.

There is typically a $12-$22 materials fee for the advanced literature class and the book is provided to enrolled students. In the fall 2010 semester, the class will read Indagine non autorizzata by Lucarelli Carlo (see book).
